| Whale Watching Season Date: Approx May to Mid November. Over 9,000 Humpback Whales have begun their journey north along the coast of NSW and whale watching cruises will operate out of Nelson Bay Port Stephens from the middle of May to late November. Port Stephens offers one of the best vantage points anywhere along our coast to view these 40 tonne mega-mammals swimming close in along our shores. Port Stephens juts right out into the East Australian Current, remember the EAC and Finding Nemo? This means the whales have to swim close inshore when travelling north to avoid being set back against the strong southerly current. Humpbacks normally swim around 7 kilometres an hour and need to conserve their energy for the long haul, so by sticking close to the rocks the whales make better headway. That’s good for the whales and great for whale watching as we don’t have to go far out to find them. This also makes good viewing from many of the headland vantages around the area. Contact the resort for more information and whale watching packages. |
