MEDIA RELEASE - 7 April 2010
Samurai
Beach Resort goes even greener

Port Stephens Council owned Samurai beach Resort, this week, became the first accommodation provider in the Hunter to be awarded the Advanced Eco Tourism Accreditation by Ecotourism Australia.

The certification is a globally recognised brand which assists travellers to choose a genuine and authentic experience that is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.

Samurai Beach Resort Manager Simon Beckett said it was a great result for the resort.

“We’re really proud of our environmental initiatives, we like to think we’re leading the charge in eco friendly accommodation in this region and now we’ve got the certificate to prove it,” he said.

This is the second environmental accreditation Samurai Beach Resort has received. It was the first accommodation provider in Port Stephens to be awarded AAA Environmentally Friendly Green Star.

“The resort is committed to the preservation and improvement of its immediate environment and surrounding wetlands,” said Mr Beckett.

“We recently planted 275 Swamp Mahogany trees throughout the resort and along the adjoining wetlands to help boost koala food stocks.”

The ECO Certification program assures travellers that certified products are backed by a commitment to sustainable practices and provides high quality nature-based tourism experiences.

The resort has many eco-tourism experiences for guests including a Koala tracking program. During Earth Hour last month, it was the only business in Port Stephens to register a full two hour power shut off while holding a candle-lit cocktail party for guests.

“This accreditation is a fantastic achievement that confirms our commitment to our environmental management plan,” he added.

Did you know that we recently planted 275 Swamp Mahogany trees throughout the resort and along the adjoining wetlands to help boost koala food stocks?

We were helped by children from local Anna Bay Public School who were treated to an educational talk on koalas and caring for the environment. The kids even spotted a koala and in true Samurai Beach Resort style were allowed to name it - they chose the name "Stinky" !!!  (don't ask)
